In a protest reminiscent of the Canadian Truckers, a convoy of 1,700 tractors blocked the main road leading to the Brandenburg Gate, thousands of German Farmers are protesting the government’s intention to reduce diesel subsidies and tax breaks for agricultural vehicles in the coming year as part of Berlin’s 2024 austerity measures. Following a constitutional court ruling last month that nullified 60 billion euros of earmarked debt, the federal government recently unveiled plans to achieve approximately 900 million euros ($983.34 million) in annual savings on farmer subsidies.
According to the budget for the upcoming year, the elimination of a partial tax refund on agricultural diesel, coupled with the removal of tax exemptions for agricultural vehicles, is proposed to meet the specified saving targets. Farmers argue that such measures would jeopardize their livelihoods and the competitiveness of Germany’s agricultural sector.
The President of the German Farmers’ Association cautions that unless the government retracts its measures, “starting from January 8, we will be present in a manner unprecedented in the country. We will not tolerate this.”
It remains to be seen how this protest will develop?
