Iran raises the bar !

It has been reported that the Iranian Navy have positioned one of their warships in the Red Sea. The Alborz destroyer is part of its regular flotilla missions in international waters. Designated as a military vessel within the 94th flotilla of the Iranian Navy, the Alborz successfully traversed the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait, officially entering the Red Sea on Monday.

Iranian state media did not provide specific details about the mission of the Alborz warship. However, it was mentioned that Iranian warships have been operating in open waters since 2009 to secure shipping routes, combat piracy, and perform various tasks. Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis have targeted vessels in the Red Sea since November, expressing support for the Palestinian group Hamas in its conflict with Israel. This has led to a shift in shipping routes, with many major companies opting for the longer and more expensive journey around Africa’s Cape of Good Hope instead of traversing the Suez Canal, which handles approximately 12% of global trade.

In the last 24 hours there have been no Houthi attacks on ships and, the Pentagon early today denied reports that Houthi rebels attacked a US warship in the Red Sea.

Last month, an unidentified high-ranking Houthi official issued a threat to “sink” warships belonging to the United States and its Western allies, pledging to transform the Red Sea into their “graveyard,” as reported by Iran International, citing the semi-official Iranian news agency Tasnim. Despite the ominous rhetoric, defence analysts cast doubt on the credibility of the threat, emphasizing the significant disparity in capabilities between the Houthi militia and the world’s most advanced navy.

Todays report comes only hours after it was announced that the USS Gerald R. Ford Strike Group is set to return home from the Mediterranean in the coming days, as stated by the Navy’s 6th Fleet on Monday. The decision aligns with the scheduled redeployment of the carrier strike group to its home port, with the aim of preparing for future deployments. The initial deployment to the Mediterranean was in response to Hamas’s October 7 attack on Israel, contributing to regional deterrence and defence posture. The Department of Defence continues to assess global force posture, assuring extensive capabilities both in the Mediterranean and across the Middle East. As the USS Gerald R. Ford Strike Group departs, other warships, including the USS Bataan and USS Carter Hall, have been deployed to the eastern Mediterranean in a rotational shift.

With this moves it means that the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower will now be the lone U.S. aircraft carrier in the region. Is Iran posturing and asserting itself ? Who knows, what we do know is that in recent weeks despite considerable provocations, Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has made it clear that his country would continue to support Hamas and the Palestinian people but it does not want to go to war itself.
