Israel Egypt Escalation ?

Israel seeks to take control of Philadelphi Corridor. On January 13, Netanyahu stated that reclaiming control of the Philadelphi Corridor is “one possibility for what I call a southern barrier.” This comes after the Wall Street Journal reported earlier in the month that Israel had informed Egypt of plans for a military operation to regain control of the corridor.

Egypt issued a warning on Monday, cautioning that any Israeli attempt to occupy the border area known as the Philadelphi Corridor, situated between Egypt and the Gaza Strip, would jeopardize bilateral relations between the two countries. Diaa Rashwan, Chairman of Egypt’s State Information Service, dismissed recent Israeli claims suggesting weapons smuggling from Egypt to Gaza via the Rafah border crossing as “empty and ridiculous.” Rashwan stated that such allegations are made by Israel to justify its ongoing punitive measures against Palestinians in Gaza.

Emphasizing that any Israeli attempt to occupy the Philadelphi Corridor would violate security agreements and protocols between Israel and Egypt, Rashwan highlighted that such a move would pose a serious threat to Egyptian-Israeli relations. The Philadelphi Corridor, a 14-kilometer buffer zone on the Egypt-Gaza border, is guaranteed by the Israeli-Egyptian Peace Treaty of 1979.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has expressed the view that Israel should control the Philadelphi Corridor, a move that, if implemented, would physically separate Gaza from Egypt. Israel has conducted sustained air and ground attacks on the Gaza Strip since a cross-border attack by the Palestinian group Hamas, resulting in significant casualties and damage. The United Nations reports that the Israeli offensive has displaced a large portion of Gaza’s population, leading to shortages of essential resources and extensive damage to infrastructure.
